Using the recurse (<option>-r</option>) option to <citerefentry><refentrytitle>diff</refentrytitle><manvolnum>1</manvolnum></citerefentry> to generate patches is fine, but please look at the resulting patches to make sure there is no unnecessary junk in there. In particular, diffs between two backup files, <filename>Makefile</filename>s when the port uses <command>Imake</command> or GNU <command>configure</command>, etc., are unnecessary and have to be deleted. If it was necessary to edit <filename>configure.in</filename> and run <command>autoconf</command> to regenerate <command>configure</command>, do not take the diffs of <command>configure</command> (it often grows to a few thousand lines!). Instead, define <literal>USES=autoreconf</literal> and take the diffs of <filename>configure.in</filename>.

This is achieved by passing <literal>-jX</literal> flag to <citerefentry><refentrytitle>make</refentrytitle><manvolnum>1</manvolnum></citerefentry> running on vendor code. This is the default build behavior of ports. Unfortunately, not all ports handle parallel building well and it may be required to explicitly disable this feature by adding the <literal>MAKE_JOBS_UNSAFE=yes</literal> variable. It is used when a port is known to be broken with <literal>-jX</literal> due to race conditions causing intermittent build failures.
The Mesa Project is an effort to provide free OpenGL implementation. To specify a dependency on various components of this project, use <literal>USES= gl</literal> and <varname>USE_GL</varname>. See <xref linkend="uses-gl"/> for a full list of available components. For backwards compatibility, the value of <literal>yes</literal> maps to <literal>glu</literal>.
If the application provides a <application>qmake</application> project file (<filename>*.pro</filename>), define <literal>USES= qmake</literal> along with <literal>USE_QT</literal>. <literal>USES= qmake</literal> already implies a build dependency on qmake, therefore the qmake component can be omitted from <literal>USE_QT</literal>. Similar to <link linkend="using-cmake"><application>CMake</application></link>, <application>qmake</application> supports out-of-source builds, which can be enabled by specifying the <literal>outsource</literal> argument (see <link linkend="using-qmake-example"><literal>USES= qmake</literal> example</link>). Also see <xref linkend="using-qmake-arguments"/>.
To address this problem, for each <literal><replaceable>PLACEHOLDER</replaceable>=<replaceable>value</replaceable></literal>, a <literal><replaceable>PLACEHOLDER</replaceable>_regex=<replaceable>regex</replaceable></literal> can be set, with the <literal><replaceable>regex</replaceable></literal> part matching <replaceable>value</replaceable> more precisely.

Do not rely on <trademark class="registered">Linux</trademark>-specific socket behavior. In particular, default socket buffer sizes are different (call <citerefentry><refentrytitle>setsockopt</refentrytitle><manvolnum>2</manvolnum></citerefentry> with <literal>SO_SNDBUF</literal> and <literal>SO_RCVBUF</literal>, and while <trademark class="registered">Linux</trademark>'s <citerefentry><refentrytitle>send</refentrytitle><manvolnum>2</manvolnum></citerefentry> blocks when the socket buffer is full, FreeBSD's will fail and set <literal>ENOBUFS</literal> in errno.
Look for <filename>Makefile.in</filename> and <filename>configure</filename> in <varname>PATHFIX_WRKSRC</varname> (defaults to <varname>WRKSRC</varname>) and fix common paths to make sure they respect the FreeBSD hierarchy. For example, it fixes the installation directory of <command>pkgconfig</command>'s <filename>.pc</filename> files to <filename>${PREFIX}/libdata/pkgconfig</filename>. If the port uses <literal>USES=autoreconf</literal>, <filename>Makefile.am</filename> will be added to <varname>PATHFIX_MAKEFILEIN</varname> automatically.
<literal>USES=autoreconf</literal>, <filename>Makefile.am</filename> será adicionado automaticamente a <varname>PATHFIX_MAKEFILEIN</varname>.
