A _shell_ provides a command line interface for interacting with the operating system. A shell receives commands from the input channel and executes them. Many shells provide built in functions to help with everyday tasks such as file management, file globbing, command line editing, command macros, and environment variables. FreeBSD comes with several shells, including an extended POSIX(R) shell (man:sh[1]) and the extended C shell (man:tcsh[1]). Other shells are available from the FreeBSD Ports Collection, such as `zsh` and `bash`.

FreeBSD also uses disk space for _swap space_ to provide _virtual memory_. This allows the computer to behave as though it has much more memory than it actually does. When FreeBSD runs out of memory, it moves some of the data that is not currently being used to the swap space, and moves it back in (moving something else out) when it needs it. This is called _paging_.

File systems are a fixed size. When creating a file system during the FreeBSD installation and giving it a specific size, it may be that one wants to make the partition bigger. This is not easily accomplished without backing up, recreating the file system with the new size, and then restoring the backed up data.

A mount point is a directory where additional file systems can be grafted onto a parent file system (usually the root file system). This is further described in crossref:basics[disk-organization, Disk Organization]. Standard mount points include `/usr/`, `/var/`, `/tmp/`, `/mnt/`, and `/media/`. These directories are usually referenced to entries in `/etc/fstab`. This file is a table of various file systems and mount points and is read by the system. Most of the file systems in `/etc/fstab` are mounted automatically at boot time from the script man:rc[8] unless their entry includes `noauto`.
